The example of God’s relationship with humankind is recorded in the Jewish Scriptures which is a collection of books of a varied and complex nature which tracks to some extent this relationship. This ancient record points to the coming of a Messiah to lead his people. However in the New Testament, the Christ, the Anointed One, in the person of Jesus, who embodies both human and divine natures is the fulfilment of the Jewish Scriptures but not in the way that is expected. Far from being a military or political leader who would lead the people of Israel to be the greatest nation in the world, Jesus’ life ends in apparent failure and his disciples flee. However, the record and witness accounts of the Resurrection, the coming back to life from the dead, are a testament to God’s power over sin and death and God’s love.

To this end at each Mass lectors proclaim readings from the Old and New Testament, and together we pray the psalm, to remind us of God’s covenant with all of humanity. If you would be interested in being part of the Ministry of the Word email ministryoftheword@fsplus.info.
